Community Lighthouse
Frustrated with more and more power outages, NLI leaders decided to take action. Power outages are the leading cause of disaster-related deaths in the Gulf South. Recognizing the urgent need for resilience and preparedness, leaders developed a comprehensive strategy to establish a network of 20 Community Lighthouses across Caddo Parish. These resilience hubs provide crucial assistance during extreme weather and power outages.
Each has solar panels, backup batteries, and backup water. Hubs have well-trained volunteer Crisis Response Teams to strengthen our social fabric during normal times and provide necessary support during disasters, ensuring our neighbors do not die from isolation. In partnership with our sister organizations, we make up Together Louisiana; and we're advancing a strategy to create a network of 500 Community Lighthouses throughout our state.
The first two Community Lighthouses, at the Highland Center and Morning Star Baptist Church, are operational.
